Symptoms Of A Blown Head Gasket
Often the first initial thing we see is a climbing temperature gauge, or a warning light on the dashboard. You should pull over at this point to make sure a radiator or coolant hose hasn’t blown or a fanbelt has broken and no longer powering the fan. Check to see if you in fact have enough coolant, if no routine maintenance has been carried out there just may not be enough to perform its role.
Early symptoms can be a signpost of things to come:
- Have you been constantly been adding coolant?
- Has the car been losing power?
There are a number of checks a mechanic can do as he has more tools like C02 testers, die testers and cooling system tester pumps.
However there are some easy tests that you can do.
- Check the radiator to see if the water is bubbling. If it is, there is air getting into the system which is a classic symptom.
- If there are no bubbles at the end of driving for the day when the engine is warm leave for the night then take out the spark plugs in the morning when everything is cold and check to see if any plugs are wet, emulsified or coloured (from burning coloured coolant).
- Or finally, look for coolant stains around the engine compartment when coolant could have escaped externally and the water content has evaporated.
Remember, to continue driving an overheated car may not just blow a head gasket but could seize the engine completely.
Blown Head Gaskets Can Be Very Confusing.
The term “blown head gasket” is often used a bit like the term “cold”, we say we have a cold but it could be the flu, a cough, congestion, head cold you get my drift.
The term blown head gasket is used as a catch all… it can mean you have a crack in the head, burned valves a warped head and of course a blown head gasket to name but a few. Because of this it is often difficult to diagnose the actual problem or in fact what caused the problem. At the same time of fixing the problem you should look for the potential cause of the problem.
An example would be a thermostat failed to work and seized up in the closed position, this stopped the flow of coolant therefore pretty much the coolant in the engine tries to cool with nothing coming from the radiator. The temperature builds up the cylinder head bends(warps) under the heat and pressure and then the head gasket can’t restrain the heat, water and oil anymore and fails.
The mechanic will tell you that you have a blown head gasket. He may then remorselessly tell you that the head needs rebuilding the gasket replaced head bolts need to be replaced, cooling system cleaned out and a new cap and thermostat and while we have it stripped down a new water pump!
How do we really know what’s happened or what is the damage before starting doing some serious damage to the bank account.
Funnily enough the tests that you can carry out today are pretty much the same as the last 60-70 years and you can look at things like bubbles in the radiator and decide what are the chances of fixing the problem without huge bills or making a decision to sell, wreck or trade. Checking The Radiator Visually
I have added a few clips that I found for you on YouTube. I have also made a comment on each one as to the potential success of using Liquid Intelligence 245 on repairing these various head gasket problems.
|The first clip shows light bubbling in the radiator water. This level of bubbling would indicate a small pin hole or a developing imperfection in the head gasket and is easily fixed using Liquid Intelligence 245. The success rate on this type of repair is very high.|

|Water and smoke out of the exhaust
This is what a car looks like when a head gasket is going. This amount of smoke would indicate a breach or multiple breaches in the head gasket above one or more of the combustion chambers. At first it will start out as a little sputtering when first started… then a little bit of smoke… and as the days go by, the smoke can increase to this embarrassing level.

And the amount of bubbling of water in the radiator would indicate the size of the head gasket breach. A small pin hole in the head gasket would produce light bubbling….. whilst a substantial head gasket blow out could empty the entire cooling system of radiator water.
